Mohammed's 2nd wife: SAUDA BINT ZAM'AH

The text that follows relating to Sauda Bint Zam'ah, the second wife of Mohammed, is the appendix of the book Women in Islam, by M. Rafiqul-Haqq and P. Newton. This book  is available on Answering Islam. (The list of Mohammed's women is here)

In a nutshell
After the death of his 1st wife, Kadija, the widower Mohammed married Sauda, herself also a widow. Mohammed ended up marring several other wives (the total number of them varies depending on the source), all younger than Sauda. When that happened, Mohammed wanted to divorce Sauda because she was too old and unattractive. Sauda asked Mohammed not to divorce her. In exchange to remain married to Mohammed, at least just nominally she gave away her day (to sleep with Mohammed) to Aisha (Mohammed's child-wife) who then would sleep with Mohammed twice during his rotation among his wives.

What is the problem with that?
1. Mohammed is the example to the nation of Islam.
2. Mohammed set the precedent that a man can divorce a wife whenever he feels his wife has certain defects such as old age or lack of sex-appeal.
3. A woman has no such right.
4. Not to mention that the whole account is just perverted.
The text follows:

The following incident concerns a lady called Sauda bint Zam'ah. She was first married to one of the early Muslims, as-Sakran ibn 'Amr ibn 'Abd Shams, who took her and seven of his friends and emigrated to Ethiopia to escape persecution. In Ethiopia Sauda's husband died and she returned to her homeland.

At about the same time Muhammad lost his first wife Khadijah. Not long after, Muhammad married Sauda. No doubt because of their common experience, they could understand each other's pain and were able to comfort one another.
During the course of time Muhammad married other women. And before his death, he had nine wives.
Ibn Kathir, quoting Muslim, reported that Muhammad died leaving nine wives, but he used to apportion his days to only eight of the nine. This ninth wife was Sauda who gave her day to 'Aisha.

In spite of the long companionship Muhammad had with Sauda, the Hadith tells us that Sauda later on missed out on her privileges as a wife and a companion to Muhammad. Muhammad did not

only stop fulfilling his obligations as a husband to Sauda, but he even stopped visiting her.

The authenticity of this report is undeniable. For example Bukhari

reported:

Narrated 'Aisha that Sauda bint Zam'ah gave up her turn to 'Aisha, and so the prophet used to give 'Aisha both her day and the day of Sauda.173

But why would Sauda give up her privileges and the company of

the only man in her life to 'Aisha?

We find the answer in most commentaries on Q. 4:128:

If a woman fears rebelliousness or aversion in her husband, there is no fault in them if the couple set things right between them; right settlement is better; and souls are very prone to avarice.

Of the above verse Ibn Kathir said:

If the wife fears that her husband might reject her, or avoid her, she might give up all or some of her rights concerning financial support or clothing or housing or such other rights against him, and he can accept these concessions from her. There is no fault on her for giving up her rights and there is no fault on him if he accepts her concessions. This is why the Most High said: (there is no fault in them if the couple set things right between them) then He said: (right settlement is better) than separation... this is why, when Sauda bint Zam'ah became old, the Prophet of Allah decided to divorce her. She besought him to keep her in return of giving up her day to 'Aisha. So he accepted her offer and did not divorce her.

... on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas who said: Sauda feared that the Prophet of Allah might divorce her, so she said to him: O Prophet of Allah, do not divorce me, and my day shall belong to 'Aisha. So he did and that verse Q. 4:128 was revealed.

Why did the Prophet of Allah want to divorce Sauda? And if he did not want to divorce her why did she fear him divorcing her so that she gave up her day to 'Aisha? What was her fault?

There was no fault on Sauda's part except that she became old according to Ibn Kathir. Some reports say that Muhammad did actually divorce Sauda but she negotiated a settlement with him which he accepted.

Al-Qasim ibn Abi Beza said the prophet sent to Sauda a message divorcing her. So she waited for the prophet on his way to 'Aisha. When she saw him she said I implore you by Him who revealed His words to you and chose you above all his creation why did you divorce me. I have become old and have no need of men but I wish to be resurrected amongst your wives in the last day. So he changed his mind and she said I have given my day and night to ['Aisha] the prophet's beloved... (See Ibn Kathir on Q. 4:128)

Others say that he did not divorce her but only wanted to. What is certain though is that Sauda gave up her day to 'Aisha. But why would any woman give up her share of her only husband to another woman?

To get a fuller picture of the above incident let us look at what the commentators said about Q. 4:128.

Of Q. 4:128 Razi said:

Some said: '(Feared)' meaning 'knew', others said: '(feared)' meaning 'thought'. But all that is ignoring the obvious for no reason. What is meant (by feared) is fear itself But fear does not happen unless there are signs indicating fear. These signs here are that the man says to his wife you are ugly or you are old and I want to marry a beautiful youthful woman... the (rebelliousness or aversion) of the husband against the rights of the woman is to avoid her, looks angry when looking her in the face, deserts her sexually and mistreats her.

Did Muhammad treat Sauda as Razi commented? Sauda must have seen the writing on the wall so she decided to salvage some protection from Muhammad.

Ibn Kathir also said:

Concerning Q. 4:128 'Aisha said: 'It concerns the man who has two wives. One of them has become old or is ugly and he does not like her company much, so she says: "Do not divorce me, and you are free from your obligations towards me.'"" This Hadith is established in the Two Sahihs. What the verse seems to say is that their reconciliation, on the condition that she gives up some of her rights, and the acceptance of the husband of that, is better than complete separation, just as the Prophet kept Sauda on the condition that she gave her day to 'Aisha and did not divorce her but kept her amongst his wives. This was done in order that his nation might take him as their example and that this act is lawful and permissible.

Indeed the nation of Muhammad has imitated him. Razi informs us:

This verse was revealed first in Ibn abi as-Sa'ib who had a wife and children from her. When she became old he was about to divorce her, but she said: Do not divorce me, but let me look after my children and apportion a few nights for me every month. The husband said: If this is so, it is better for me. The second was that the Prophet wanted to divorce Sauda bint Zam'ah but she besought him to keep her on the condition that she would give up her day to 'Aisha, and he allowed that and did not divorce her. The third is reported by

'Aisha that it concerns the man who has a wife but he wants to replace her, so she says: Keep me and marry someone else and you are free from supporting me and apportioning your nights to me.

And here is what Ibn al-'Arabi, a great Muslim scholar has said:

... when Sauda bint Zam'ah became old, the Prophet of Allah wanted to divorce her. However, she preferred to remain amongst his wives, so she said, 'Keep me, and my day shall belong to 'Aisha', and he did, and thus she died as one of his wives. Ibn Abi Malikah declared that this verse was revealed regarding 'Aisha. And in this verse is the answer to those light headed fools who say that if a man took the youth of a woman and she became old he cannot replace her. So praise be to Allah who lifted such burden and made an escape from such dilemma.174

So the nation of Muhammad has innocently and completely imitated his action, and did not forget to give Allah the praise. Dr bint ash-Shati' the author of the book The Wives of the Prophet (nisaa' an-Nabi) described Sauda as an unattractive old widow and overweight.175 (Bukhari tells us that Sauda was a tall176, fat and very slow lady177)

Dr bint ash-Shati' described the matrimonial relationship between Muhammad and Sauda in the following words:

Sauda realised from the experience of her age that there is an insurmountable barrier between her and the heart of Muhammad ... and she realised without a doubt that her share of the prophet is one of mercy and kindness; not love, harmony and oneness.178

If there was no love, harmony and oneness why did Muhammad marry Sauda in the first place?
And if there was no love, harmony and oneness, where is the mercy?

Dr bint ash-Shati'said that Khola bint Hakim was the one who suggested to Muhammad marrying Sauda and 'Aisha who was seven years old at the time. "Muhammad commented on her suggestion saying: 'but who will look after the house and who will serve the daughters of the prophet?'" At this Khola suggested the marriage of Sauda... and the prophet agreed. "And Sauda was completely satisfied to take her place in the house of the prophet and to serve his daughters."179

Now the picture is clear; 'Aisha became the love of Muhammad, and Sauda became the servant of the daughters of the prophet. After so many years where Sauda cooked, washed, mended, served the prophet and his daughters and comforted the prophet in his sorrows after the death of his first wife, when Sauda became old Muhammad wanted to divorce her for no reason except that she became old and unattractive.

The Quran speaks of love and tenderness between husbands and wives in the following words:

Of His signs it is that He has created mates for you of your own kind that you may find peace of mind through them, and He has put love and tenderness between you. (Q. 30:21)

The above incident gives us an idea about the meaning and the limitations of this love and tenderness spoken of by the Qur'an. Where is the love and the mercy spoken of by the Qur'an in the incident of Sauda? Should Muhammad be judged by the Qur'an or is Muhammad above the Quran?

The author of a standard text book on Islamic law wrote:

What some men of lust who have no moral values do, in divorcing their wives without a reason, is a thing that is not stated nor approved by Islam. And Allah must take vengeance on such men in this life and the next.180

The above statement sounds beautiful and reasonable until we read a few pages later the following words by the same author:

[Divorce is permissible] if the reason was the unsuitability of the woman for enjoyment due to certain defects in her or due to old age or such things.181

Divorcing one's wife because of old age is permissible and acceptable within the scope of being good to one's wife; even considered to be the best standard,  for Muhammad described himself as the best husband and the Qur'an says of Muhammad "Thou dost most surely posses high moral excellence. Q. 68:4. And on the other hand the "Qur'an was Muhammad's character" as one Hadith says.

But Dr bint ash-Shati's excuse for Muhammad's behavior is that he was a mere human being. So the Qur'an was his character and he also was a mere human being. The equation is clear enough for all to see. And the believers believe that he is the best husband and possessor of the highest moral excellence.

Islam and Socialism, Comunism, Facism, and National Socialism (Nazism)

There is still hope
The Euston Manifesto: For a Renewal of Progressive Politics. Reading it gives me hope that we can still have a left more aligned to its roots, and not the pro-tyrant left we most commonly see today.

On the Pro-Tyrant Left
In an article with the title Idealism withouth Ilusion, in World Affairs, Allan Johnson discusses the "The Mind of the Pro-Tyrant Left." In this article he discusses why the Left tends to support tyrant regimes and idelogies. He maintains that the development of the older left-wing culture was rooted in the Enlightenment, the democratic revolutions of the eighteenth century, and the ethical socialism of the mass European labor movements. He then explains how in its place was put power-worship, authoritarianism, and a cult of the transformative power of revolutionary violence, and how the rise of Stalinism, a reactionary but non-capitalist social system, disorientated the left—bar some fragments—more or less completely. As a consequence the left clung to the dogma that the only social system that could follow capitalism was socialism. It imagined itself involved in a duel between capitalism and socialism. It thought that state ownership equalled socialism. And so—with honorable exceptions—a pro-tyrant left emerged in the twentieth century. This pro-tyrant left became critical supporters of totalitarianism—notwithstanding their knowledge of mass killings, gulags, political-famines, and military aggression. The pro-tyrant left is based on twisted logic: This pro-tyrant left thinks it holds the key to the entire world in the palm of its hand. If America is opposed to a tyrant, then—there is some dubious logic here, but this really is the crucial move—the tyrant must be opposing America. And—this is the last stretch, stay with me—therefore the tyrant is an “anti-imperialist” and, objectively, “progressive.” The problem is that this line of (twisted) thought has become vastly influential on campuses and its ideas are trickling down into the wider culture.

Socialists-Muslim Brotherhood Alliance

Jihad! List of Islamic-inspired terrorist attacks or plots in the US, Canada (and a few around the world)

At the end of his life, Mohammed set the “key to success” to the next generations of Muslims: I have been made victorious with terror [Bukhari, Vol. 4, Book 52, Number 220]. And as Mohammed is considered the role model every Muslim must follow [Koran 33:21] many Muslims do whatever they can to emulate him.

Some of the jihadis act alone: individual Muslims who become more "religious", suddenly turning violent and, in the name of Islam, going on a killing spree. This is what Daniel Pipes calls the "Sudden Jihad Syndrome".

There is Jihad in several parts of the world. I am not going to list what happens everywhere since the list grows continuously. Besides, my focus is with Canada and the US. For a comprehensive list please visit http://thereligionofpeace.com/. It is interesting though to list the name of Jihadist groups. This list will be posted here.
  • May 2013 - London. Two brave jihadists trample, kill with a knife and try to cut off the head of a British soldier in broad daylight. One of the brave jihadi says: We swear by Allah almighty we will not stop fighting you. This is consistent with the Quran 9, 112: "The believers fight in the cause of Allah, they slay and are slain, they kill and are killed."

The brave jihadi shows the fruit of his work
  • US May 2011: A 26-year-old Massachusetts man, Rezwan Ferdaus, was arrested “with step-by-step instructions as to how he planned to attack the Pentagon and Capitol.” According to the DOJ, a focal point of Ferdaus’s plots revolved around “jihad” and his desire to carry out the will of Allah (The Hill).
  • US May 2011: In what could have been a Mother’s day muslim terror attack, Rageit Almurisi, shouting "Allahu Akbar", tried to break into the cockpit of American Airlines Flight 1561 with 162 passengers. He was subdued by the crew with the help of a few passengers. The terrorist is citizen of Yemen with an American Green card (RealClearPolitic).

He admitted that the Pakistan Taliban provided him with more than $15,000 and five days of explosives training late last year and early this year, months after he became a U.S. citizen. During the sentence he told the judge he lied while swearing allegiance to the US when he became a citizen last year. He said he is a Muslim (FOX).

  •  Attack on U.S.S. Cole, October 12, 2000: In Aden, Yemen, a small dingy carrying explosives rammed the destroyer U.S.S. Cole, killing 17 sailors and injuring 39 others. Supporters of Usama Bin Laden were suspected.
  •  Airliner Hijacking in Istanbul, March 15, 2001: Three Chechens hijacked a Russian airliner during a flight from Istanbul to Moscow and forced it to fly to Medina, Saudi Arabia. The plane carried 162 passengers and a crew of 12. After a 22-hour siege during which more than 40 passengers were released, Saudi security forces stormed the plane, killing a hijacker, a passenger, and a flight attendant.
  •  Death of "the Lion of the Panjshir", September 9, 2001: Two suicide bombers fatally wounded Ahmed Shah Massoud, a leader of Afghanistan's Northern Alliance, which had opposed both the Soviet occupation and the post-Soviet Taliban government. The bombers posed as journalists and were apparently linked to al-Qaida. The Northern Alliance did not confirm Massoud's death until September 15.
  •  Terrorist Attacks on U.S. Homeland, September 11, 2001: Two hijacked airliners crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center. Soon thereafter, the Pentagon was struck by a third hijacked plane. A fourth hijacked plane, suspected to be bound for a high-profile target in Washington, crashed into a field in southern Pennsylvania. The attacks killed 3,025 U.S. citizens and other nationals. President Bush and Cabinet officials indicated that Usama Bin Laden was the prime suspect and that they considered the United States in a state of war with international terrorism. In the aftermath of the attacks, the United States formed the Global Coalition Against Terrorism.
  •  Kidnapping of Daniel Pearl, January 23, 2002: Armed militants kidnapped Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl in Karachi, Pakistan. Pakistani authorities received a videotape on February 20 depicting Pearl's murder. His grave was found near Karachi on May 16. Pakistani authorities arrested four suspects. Ringleader Ahmad Omar Saeed Sheikh claimed to have organized Pearl's kidnapping to protest Pakistan's subservience to the United States, and had belonged to Jaish-e-Muhammad, an Islamic separatist group in Kashmir. All four suspects were convicted on July 15. Saeed Sheikh was sentenced to death, the others to life imprisonment.
  •  Grenade Attack on a Church in Pakistan, March 17, 2002: Militants threw grenades into the Protestant International Church in Islamabad, Pakistan, during a service attended by diplomatic and local personnel. Five persons, two of them U.S. citizens, were killed and 46 were wounded. The dead Americans were State Department employee Barbara Green and her daughter Kristen Wormsley. Thirteen U.S. citizens were among the wounded. The Lashkar-e-Tayyiba group was suspected.

Even though my focus is in Canada and the USA, I have listed below, a few Islamic terrorist actions around the world:
  • Indonesia Feb 2011: cleric: weapons training an 'act of worship' for Muslims (AUNews).
  • Germany, Feb 2011: a Muslim man (with family in Kosovo) killed to U.S. airmen at Frankfurt airport. He shouted "Allah Akbar" before opening fire on a bus outside the airport (FoxNews).
  • UK, Feb 2011: Rajib Karim, a 31-year-old Bangladeshi man and former British Airways computer specialist, was convicted of four counts of engaging in preparation for terrorist attacks. He was plotting with U.S.-born extremist cleric Anwar al-Awlaki to blow up an airplane (FoxNews).
  • UK Dec/2010 - Terror suspects in custody over 'pre-Christmas plot' (BBC)
  • The Netherlands Dec/2010 - Dutch police arrested 12 Somalis on Christmas Eve on suspicion of plotting an imminent terrorist attack in the Netherlands (National Post)
  • The Phillipines Nov/2009 - Philippine Muslim Clan Tied to "gruesome massacre of civilians unequalled in recent history", in which 21 Phillipinos are killed on the way to vote. Women are raped, and then shot in gentitals (YahooNews;  Singapore Straigh Times)

The Religion of Eternal Outrage

Anything works as pretext for Muslims to show how lovely Islam is.

  • Cairo, May 2011: An answer to the burial of Osama Bin Laden in the sea following "Islamic rituals" in a clear attempt to appease Islam (Sun-Times):
Muslim clerics said Monday that Osama bin Laden’s burial at sea was a violation of Islamic tradition that may further provoke militant calls for revenge attacks against American targets. …“The Americans want to humiliate Muslims through this burial, and I don’t think this is in the interest of the U.S. administration,” said Omar Bakri Mohammed, a radical cleric in Lebanon.
  • Afghanistan, April 2011: An obscure Pastor in rural USA burned one copy of the Koran. Nearly two weeks later, Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the "desecration" e Imams called upon the faithful to protest (HotAir; UN Dispatch) . Thousands stormed UN compounds in Herat and Mazar-i-Sharif killing seven foreign UN employees who had nothing to do with the Koran burning (FOX). The irony is that the fire that followed the attack ended burning Korans.

Free, on-line books on Islam

I am listing here freely available, on-line, books on Islam. My intention is to compile a reference list.

1. Books by Mohammad Anwar Shaikh
a) ISLAM: The Arab Imperialism
b) Islam: Sex and Violence
c) ISLAM AND THE PEOPLE OF THE BOOK

About Mr. Shaikh: born into an Islamic Sunni family of Kashmiri ancestry in the Punjab. His mother could recite a large part of the Qur'an from memory. During the violent days of the Partition of India in 1947 he, then filled with Islamic fervor, killed on one day two Sikhs, a father and his son. In his youth, Shaikh was a young ardent believer. He later killed another Sikh. But when he reached the age of 25, he began doubting Islam and later became its ardent critic, and memories of his crime have haunted him ever since. Thereafter he immigrated into U.K., married a Welsh woman, and became a successful businessman. Shaikh was living in Cardiff when a fatwa was issued against him from his homeland Pakistan in 1995, where at least fourteen clerics issued death sentences against him for renouncing and criticizing Islam.

From his books we learn that Islam in reality is not a religion as it is portrayed along other major religions of the world; but when the thin veil covering it is unmasked it appears in its true colors to be Arab Imperialism. From Arab point of view the Prophet could be considered to be a great patriot forming wonderful strategies for dominance of Arab Imperialism under the garb of Islam. The most tempting tenets offered to its followers to propagate this Imperialism are knocked into their heads as religious virtues. They lie, kill, loot, plunder, rape, make slaves of enemy women and children with the sanction of religion. These again leads them to paradise of beautiful women, young beautiful boys, and enhances sexual prowess as rewards.

2.  Women in Islam, by M. Rafiqul-Haqq and P. Newton. This book is available on Answering Islam.

3. This is not an on-line book but its review is: Islamic Jihad: A Legacy of Forced Conversion, Imperialism and Slavery, by M. A. Khan.

Islam and Democracy: contrary values

A few comments and articles on Islam and Democracy

1. Is Islam compatible with democracy? by Fjordman.

2. Professor Bernard Lewis is the distinguished scholar widely and aptly admired as the West’s preeminent authority on Islam. In a 1954 essay called “Communism and Islam” (published at International Affairs apud A. C. McCarthy), Professor Lewis considered “the very nature of Islamic society, tradition, and thought,” and concluded that its principal defining characteristic is the “authoritarianism, perhaps we may even say the totalitarianism, of the Islamic political tradition.” Expanding on this, he wrote :
There are no parliaments or representative assemblies of any kind, no councils or communes, no chambers of nobility or estates, no municipalities in the history of Islam; nothing but the sovereign power, to which the subject owed complete and unwavering obedience as a religious duty imposed by the Holy Law. . . . For the last thousand years, the political thinking of Islam has been dominated by such maxims as “tyranny is better than anarchy,” and “whose power is established, obedience to him is incumbent.”
Many attempts have been made to show that Islam and democracy are identical — attempts usually based on a misunderstanding of Islam or democracy or both. This sort of argument expresses a need of the uprooted Muslim intellectual who is no longer satisfied with or capable of understanding traditional Islamic values, and who tries to justify, or rather, restate, his inherited faith in terms of the fashionable ideology of the day. It is an example of the romantic and apologetic presentation of Islam that is a recognized phase in the reaction of Muslim thought to the impact of the West.
3. Translated from the website of Dr. Salah al-Sawy, the secretary-general of the Assembly of Muslim Jurists of America (AMJA), 28 March 2011:

Between the Shura and Democracy

Q: What is the difference between the Shura and democracy, and which is preferred? Are there any books which could benefit me on this topic? May Allah reward you well.

A: In the name of Allah, the most merciful and gracious.

Praise be to Allah, and peace be upon him the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family, companions, and those that follow him. The Shura comes from the rulings of the shari'a, and an entire surah of the Qur'an was sent down with this name. The difference between it and democracy is that the Shura does not exist (under Islam) except in the areas of permissible actions or legislative amnesty. For things which have been stipulated in the texts of Islam, the Ummah possesses no power except to acknowledge and obey, following the saying of the Most High: "It is not fitting for a Believer, man or woman, when a matter has been decided by Allah and His Messenger to have any option about their decision: if any one disobeys Allah and His Messenger, he is indeed on a clearly wrong Path"
[Qur'an 33:36]. For example, it is not for the Shura to consider, "Should the noon prayer contain four or five bows?" Or, "Should we fast during the month of Ramadan, or should we replace it with the month of Shawwal?" Or, "Should we forbid wine or allow it?" Or, "Should we forbid adultery, or permit it if it's done by consensual agreement of those who have reached the legal age, and it's not done on the married couple's bed?"

Al-Bukhari said in his Sahih: "The Imams after the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him) would consult the trustworthy scholars in things which were permissible, to take the best option. But if the Qur'an or the Sunnah was clear on the matter, they wouldn't transgress against it, following the example of the Prophet (peace be upon him). The reciters of the Qur'an would consult, whether old or young, and they were careful to adhere to the book of Almighty Allah."

But democracy gives free reign to the authority of the Ummah, and puts no ceiling on it. The law is the expression of its will, and if the law says it, the conscience must be silent! A constitutionalist even said: "We have departed from the divine right to rule for kings, and replaced it with the divine right to rule for parliaments!" The shari'a, on the other hand, differentiates between the source of the legal system and the source of the political authority. The source of the legal system is the shari'a, while the source of the political authority is the Ummah. Meanwhile democracy makes the Ummah the source of both. On my website there is a book named "Political Pluralism." If you review it, it will you benefit you in regards to this topic, Allah-willing. Allah Almighty is all-powerful, all-knowing.

4. Excert of interview given by Islamic Scholar Abd Al-Karim Bakkar to Al-Arabiya TV on March 6, 2009. From MEMRI TV. Clip at http://www.memritv.org/clip/en/2071.htm.
Interviewer: "What is your position, as an Islamic scholar, on democracy?"
Abd Al-Karim Bakkar: "Democracy runs counter to Islam on several issues."
Interviewer: "You mean it contradicts Islam on these issues?"
Abd Al-Karim Bakkar: "Yes. But democracy is compatible with Islam on other issues. In democracy, legislation is the prerogative of the people. It is the people who draw up the constitution, and they have the authority to amend it as well. On this issue we differ.
5. Five best arguments against Sharia in the US (the same for Canada)
  1. U.S. law is the “supreme law of the land,” no exceptions.
  2. Sharia, as “divine revelation,” is inherently undemocratic.
  3. Many aspects of Sharia are flagrantly unconstitutional.
  4. Sharia is fundamentally religious law, and should be inapplicable to U.S. criminal or civil law.
  5. Subjectively, Sharia is a discriminatory and cruel legal system.
6. Cleric: Arab revolution declared inconsistent with Islamic laws; rallies contradict the laws of Islam (ABC).

7. Saadi Gadhafi, son of the outed dictator of Lybia, made the following statement in relation to the incoming elections in Lybia: "We have to exert pressure to change this situation and to remove this evil doing that exists in Libya. We do not know any such thing as elections. We are a Muslim nation," he said (10/Feb/2021, Reuters).

Apostasy (i.e., a Muslim who leaves Islam) is a crime punishable by death

Under Islam, Muslims belong to the Ummah, the nation of Islam. Islamic nationality is religious, not political, not to a country. That is why Muslims have no loyalty to the country where they live if that country is not Islamic. Therefore, when a Muslim leaves the Islamic faith, he/she is perceived by the other Muslims as betraying the whole nation of Islam. Islam is indeed submission!

(see examples of apostasy as a crime here)

Muslims who leave Islam (by losing faith or converting to other religion) commit the crime of apostasy, punishable by death.
According to the statement of Allah's Apostle, 'Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him.'" (Bukhari, Volume 9, Book 84, Number 57)
Muhammad again:
It was narrated from Ubadah bin Samit that the Messenger of Allah said: “Carry out the legal punishments on relatives and strangers, and do not let the fear of blame stop you from carrying out the command of Allah.” So we know (1) that the penalty for apostasy is death, and (2) that Muslims are supposed to carry out the penalty on relatives. (Sunan Ibn Majah 2540)
Muhammad once more:
"Allah's Apostle said, "The blood of a Muslim who confesses that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that I am His Apostle, cannot be shed except in three cases: In Qisas for murder, a married person who commits illegal sexual intercourse and the one who reverts from Islam (apostate) and leaves the Muslims."Sahih al-Bukhari, 9:83:17
Bukhari (Volume 9, Book 84, Number 58) describes the relaxed attitude of Mohammed and his followers after killing an apostate (they kept on their "religious duty" as if nothing had happened):
Narrated Abu Burda: ... There was a fettered man beside Abu Muisa. Mu'adh asked, "Who is this (man)?" Abu Muisa said, "He was a Jew and became a Muslim and then reverted back to Judaism." Then Abu Muisa requested Mu'adh to sit down but Mu'adh said, "I will not sit down till he has been killed. This is the judgment of Allah and His Apostle (for such cases) and repeated it thrice. Then Abu Musa ordered that the man be killed, and he was killed. Abu Musa added, "Then we discussed the night prayers and one of us said, 'I pray and sleep, and I hope that Allah will reward me for my sleep as well as for my prayers.'"
The Manual of Islamic Law Umdat al-Salik from the "moderate" Egyptian Al-Azhar University (the same where US President Obama spoke in April 2009 in an attempt to reach out to the Muslim world) says that:
08.1 When a person who has reached puberty and is sane voluntarily apostatizes (changes religion) from Islam, he deserves to be killed.
08.4 There is no indemnity for killing an apostate (O. or any expiation, since it is killing someone who deserves to die).
Now, compare this to Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:
Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.
Apostasy is excellent for tyrants: whoever opposes them politically, are accused to be apostates and then incarcerated or killed – that is why apostasy is a crime in all 57 Islamic countries.
"The four main schools of jurisprudence (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi`i, and Hanbali) as well as the other four schools of jurisprudence (the four Shiite schools of Az-Zaidiyyah, Al-Ithna-`ashriyyah, Al-Ja`fariyyah, and Az-Zaheriyyah) agree that apostates must be executed" -- Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, head of the European Council for Fatwa and Research (ECFR) and president of the International Union for Muslim Scholars (IUMS).
In Saudi Arabia, Iran, Sudan, Afghanistan, parts of Pakistan … penalty for apostasy is death.

In “moderate” Egypt, Malaysia, Indonesia, Turkey, if one wants to change the religion (in his ID) to Islam it is allowed; to change away from Islam he/she is taken to court.

If an ex-Muslim lives in a Non-Islamic country, he may be away from an Islamic government, but he is fair game for other Muslims, sometimes even persecuted by his own family.

The Baha’i (in Iran) and the Ahmadiyya (in Indonesia) have been persecuted because they are considered apostates. The former believes Mohammed is not the last prophet; the latter rejects violence.

See examples of former Muslims being punished by this crime in another post Kill any Muslim who leaves Islam.

There are two types of apostasy (murtad)
Murtad fitri (natural apostate) - Anyone who is born to Muslim parents and leaves Islam is stigmatized as in the sense that he was born genetically Muslim and has rejected his gift of birth.
Murtad milli - anyone who converts to Islam and later leaves it (a person who has turned his back to the Ummah).
Update on Mar 2011 - I found in Islam Online the answer to the following question: Why is the apostate to be executed in Islam? The answer, based on the same Koran and Hadith verses mentioned abova, includes explanations such as (emphasis mine):
If a Muslim apostatizes and meets the conditions of apostasy, i.e., he is of sound mind, an adult and does that of his own free will then his blood may be shed with impunity. He is to be executed by the Muslim ruler or by his deputy, such as the qaadi or judge, and he is not to be washed (after death, in preparation for burial), the funeral prayer is not to be offered for him and he is not to be buried with the Muslims.
Perhaps you think that if a person follows the truth and enters into it and embraces the one true religion which Allaah has enjoined, then we allow him to leave it quite easily whenever he wants and to utter the words of kufr (disbelief) that put him outside of Islam, so he can reject Allaah, His Messenger, His Books and His religion, and there is no punishment as deterrent, how will that affect him and others who enter the religion?
Do you not see that this would make the one true religion, that everyone should follow, like a shop or store which a person can enter when he wants and leave when he wants, and it may encourage others to forsake the truth.
Moreover, this is not someone who has never known the truth and practiced it and worshipped in accordance with it; rather this is a person who has known the truth, and practiced the religion and done the rituals of worship, so the punishment is no greater than he deserves. Moreover, such strong rulings as this are only applied to such a person whose life is no longer considered to be useful, because he knew the truth and followed the religion, then he left it and forsook it. What soul can be more evil than the soul of such a person?
In conclusion, the answer is that Allaah is the One Who revealed this religion and enjoined it. He [Allaah] is the One Who ruled that the one who enters it and then leaves it is to be executed. This ruling does not come from the Muslim' s ideas or suggestions. As this is the case, then we must follow the ruling of Allaah so long as we are content to accept Him as our Lord and God.
Where is that Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights? Well, it has never had any legal value according to the "true religion" and its Sharia.

Jews as Depicted in the Qur'an

Islam is anti-Semite top the core! See what Islam Online says (print screen of the page is at the end of this post in case the link is broken. You can find it also here and here):

Dear Sheikh! As-Salam `Alaykum. What, according to the Qur'an, are the main characteristics and qualities of Jews?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All thanks and praise are due to Allah and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear questioner, we are really pleased to have your question and we pray to Allah to make our humble efforts, exerted solely for His Sake, come up to your expectation.

As regards the question you posed, the following is the fatwa issued by Sheikh `Atiyyah Saqr, former Head of Al-Azhar Fatwa Committee, in which he states the following:

"The Qur'an has specified a considerable deal of its verses to talking about Jews, their personal qualities and characteristics. The Qur'anic description of Jews is quite impartial; praising them in some occasions where they deserve praise and condemning them in other occasions where they practice blameworthy acts. Yet, the latter occasions outnumbered the former, due to their bad qualities and the heinous acts they used to commit.

The Qur'an praises them on the verse that reads: " And verily We gave the Children of Israel the Scripture and the Command and the Prophethood, and provided them with good things and favored them above (all) peoples." (Al-Jathiyah:16) i.e. the peoples of their time.

Among the bad qualities they were characterized with are the following:

1. They used to fabricate things and falsely ascribe them to Allah. Allah Almighty says: " That is because they say: We have no duty to the Gentiles. They speak a lie concerning Allah knowingly." (Al-`Imran 3:75) Also: "The Jews say: Allah's hand is fettered. Their hands are fettered and they are accursed for saying so. Nay, but both His hands are spread out wide in bounty. He bestoweth as He will." (Al-Ma`idah 5:64)

In another verse Almighty Allah says: "Verily Allah heard the saying of those who said, (when asked for contributions to the war): "Allah, forsooth, is poor, and we are rich! We shall record their saying with their slaying of the Prophets wrongfully and We shall say: Taste ye the punishment of burning!" (Al-`Imran 3:181)

2. They love to listen to lies. Concerning this Allah says: "and of the Jews: listeners for the sake of falsehood, listeners on behalf of other folk" (Al-Ma'idah: 5:41)

3. Disobeying Almighty Allah and never observing His commands. Allah says: "And because of their breaking their covenant, We have cursed them and made hard their hearts." (Al-Ma'idah: 5:13)

4. Disputing and quarreling. This is clear in the verse that reads: "Their Prophet said unto them: Lo! Allah hath raised up Saul to be a king for you. They said: How can he have kingdom over us when we are more deserving of the kingdom than he is, since he hath not been given wealth enough?" (Al-Baqarah 2:247)

5. Hiding the truth and standing for misleading. This can be understood from the verse that reads: “…distort the Scripture with their tongues, that ye may think that what they say is from the Scripture, when it is not from the Scripture.” (Al-`Imran 3:78)

6. Staging rebellion against the Prophets and rejecting their guidance. This is clear in the verse: “And when ye said: O Moses! We will not believe in thee till we see Allah plainly.” (Al-Baqarah 2:55)

7. Hypocrisy. In a verse, we read: “And when they fall in with those who believe, they say:fs We believe; but when they go apart to their devils they declare: Lo! we are with you; verily we did but mock.” (Al-Baqarah: 14) In another verse, we read: “Enjoin ye righteousness upon mankind while ye yourselves forget (to practice it)? And ye are readers of the Scripture! Have ye then no sense?” (Al-Baqarah 2:44)

8. Giving preference to their own interests over the rulings of religion and the dictates of truth. Allah says: “…when there cometh unto you a messenger (from Allah) with that which ye yourselves desire not, ye grow arrogant, and some ye disbelieve and some ye slay?” (Al-Baqarah 2:87)

9. Wishing evil for people and trying to mislead them. This is clear in the verse that reads: “Many of the People of the Scripture long to make you disbelievers after your belief, through envy on their own account, after the truth hath become manifest unto them.” (Al-Baqarah 2:109)

10. They feel pain to see others in happiness and are gleeful when others are afflicted with a calamity. This is clear in the verse that reads: “If a lucky chance befall you, it is evil unto them, and if disaster strike you they rejoice thereat.” (Al-`Imran 3:120)

11. They are known of their arrogance and haughtiness. They claimed to be the sons and of Allah and His beloved ones. Allah tells us about this in the verse that reads: “The Jews and Christians say: We are sons of Allah and His loved ones.” (Al-Ma’idah 5:18)

12. Utilitarianism and opportunism are among their innate traits. This is clear in the verse that reads: “And of their taking usury when they were forbidden it, and of their devouring people's wealth by false pretences.” (An-Nisa’ 4:161)

13. Their impoliteness and indecent way of speech is beyond description. Referring to this, the Qur’anic verse reads: “Some of those who are Jews change words from their context and say: "We hear and disobey; hear thou as one who heareth not" and "Listen to us!" distorting with their tongues and slandering religion. If they had said: "We hear and we obey; hear thou, and look at us" it had been better for them, and more upright. But Allah hath cursed them for their disbelief, so they believe not, save a few.” (An-Nisa’ 4:46)

14. It is easy for them to slay people and kill innocents. Nothing in the world is dear to their hearts than shedding blood and murdering human beings. They never give up this trait even with the Messengers and the Prophets. Allah says: “…and slew the prophets wrongfully.” (Al-Baqarah 2:61)

15. They are merciless and heartless. In this meaning, the Qur’anic verse explains: “Then, even after that, your hearts were hardened and became as rocks, or worse than rocks, for hardness.” (Al-Baqarah 2:74)

16. They never keep their promises or fulfill their words. Almighty Allah says: “Is it ever so that when ye make a covenant a party of you set it aside? The truth is, most of them believe not.” (Al-Baqarah 2:100)

17. They rush hurriedly to sins and compete in transgression. Allah says: “They restrained not one another from the wickedness they did. Verily evil was that they used to do!” (Al-Ma’idah 5:79)

18. Cowardice and their love for this worldly life are their undisputable traits. To this, the Qur’an refers when saying: “Ye are more awful as a fear in their bosoms than Allah. That is because they are a folk who understand not. They will not fight against you in a body save in fortified villages or from behind walls. Their adversity among themselves is very great. Ye think of them as a whole whereas their hearts are divers.” (Al-Hashr:13-14) Allah Almighty also says: “And thou wilt find them greediest of mankind for life and (greedier) than the idolaters.” (Al-Baqarah 2:96)

19. Miserliness runs deep in their hearts. Describing this, the Qur’an states: “Or have they even a share in the Sovereignty? Then in that case, they would not give mankind even the speck on a date stone.” (An-Nisa’ 4:53)

20. Distorting Divine Revelation and Allah’s Sacred Books. Allah says in this regard: “Therefore woe be unto those who write the Scripture with their hands anthem say, "This is from Allah," that they may purchase a small gain therewith. Woe unto them for that their hands have written, and woe unto them for that they earn thereby.” (Al-Baqara 2:79)

After this clear explanation, we would like to note that these are but some of the most famous traits of the Jews as described in the Qur’an. They have revolted against the Divine ordinances, distorted what has been revealed to them and invented new teachings which, they claimed, were much more better than what has been recorded in the Torah. It was for these traits that they found no warm reception in all countries where they tried to reside. Rather, they would either be driven out or live in isolation. It was Almighty Allah who placed on them His Wrath and made them den of humiliation due to their transgression. Almighty Allah told us that He’d send to them people who’d pour on them rain of severe punishment that would last till the Day of Resurrection. All this gives us glad tidings of the coming victory of Muslims over them once Muslims stick to strong faith and belief in Allah and adopt the modern means of technology.

Persecution of Jews

Islam is anti-Semite to the core. During his life, Mohammed had several altercations with the Jewish tribes around him (which ended up being vanished form the map) as well as with a few Jewish individuals (who ended up assassinated). Since the justification for his harsh actions ended up part of the Koran, they have been written in stone and are part of Islam.

(See examples of anti-Semitism here)

There is a Fatwa that summarizes quite nicely the main characteristics and qualities of Jews as depicted in the Koran. Meanwhile, Pope Benedict XVI emphasises that the Jews have no collective guilt for the death of Jesus (who was Jew by the way), silly excuse used for persecutions in the past.

Currently, Western anti-Semitism is aligning with Islamic anti-Semitis. As Roger Simon posted recently, "the cause of the need to hold Israel to a higher standard than any other nation, could also not be more obvious. It is titanic (and justifiable) guilt over the Holocaust. What Europe did to the Jews, marching innocent human beings into gas chambers, is arguably the most monstrous crime in recorded history. Europeans desperately want something to be wrong with the Jews to exonerate themselves, to some degree anyway, for that unconscionably reprehensible act."

Gays rights under Islam

Even though not explicitly stated, gays and lesbians have their rights guarantee by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Article 6 (Everyone has the right to recognition everywhere as a person before the law) and Article 7 (All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law) are sufficiently clear.

But under Islam Gays and lesbians have no rights (except the right to be killed). See for yourself:

International Women’s Day celebration, Islamic style

2011
In Egypt, Cairo's central Tahrir Square (famous for the rallies against Mubarak) was occupied by women — some in headscarves and flowing robes, others in jeans — marching to celebrate International Women's Day, demanding equal rights and an end to sexual harassment. But crowds of men soon outnumbered the women and chased them out. Some men said women’s role was to stay home and raise presidents, not to run for president. Others accused the women of being “foreigners”, and had their flyers and posters torn up. Many of the protesters’ male critics invoked religion saying Islam itself decrees that men and women are different, and that men should be responsible for, and rule over, women. At one point, a crowd of male counter-protesters circled a women in a niqab (the full, black veil that covers everything but a woman’s eyes and is worn by Islamic fundamentalists in Egypt) chanting, “This is an Egyptian woman!”… (APThe Daily Beast)

Iran has just become member of the UN's Commission on the Status of Women, an organization whose mission "is dedicated exclusively to gender equality and advancement of women." In the very first demonstration for International Women's Day, protesters were beaten by security forces. Women's rights activists have called for demonstrations to advocate and defend the rights of both men and women in Iran, as well as more general democratic principles. (Amnesty International

In the Sudan, riot police in Khartoum arrested more than 40 women minutes after they started a protest against rape and rights abuses. Sudanese women's groups organized the protest against discriminatory laws on Tuesday -- marked as International Women's Day across the world. Before the rally, organizers said they were enraged by reports of the arrest and rape of Safiya Eshaq, a supporter of anti-government activist group Girifna, in Khartoum last month. (Sudan Tribune)
